— Guide

Nam Hong practical guide.

This article collects packing, photography, booking and route-choice advice for Nam Hong to Ho Thau — the two-day Red Dao crossing our guides grew up on. Twenty-two kilometres, one homestay night, Moderate difficulty, best March through May and September through November.

Use it alongside the programme page for pricing and enquiry. Related hub: Hoang Su Phi route comparison for how Nam Hong sits beside Ban Phung, Ban Luoc and Chieu Lau Thi.

Local operator voice throughout — facts from the published programme only.

— Kit

Packing for two days.

  • Trekking shoes with grip; spare socks for homestay
  • 20–25 L daypack — rain shell, warm layer for 1,500 m night
  • Headlamp, quick-dry towel, toiletries, modest sleepwear
  • Camera if you want — ridge and cloud morning are strong frames

Main bag travels by motorbike to homestay — warm layer and toiletries in daypack for Night 1. No sleeping bag needed — bedding and net provided.

Cash for tips — card rarely works at homestay. Travel insurance covering trekking up to 2,000 m.

— Lens

Photography on the ridge.

Morning cloud above Ho Thau is the signature frame — afternoon village light is flatter. Tea workers on Day 1: guide introduction before portraits.

Spare batteries — charging at homestay inconsistent.

— Prepare

Before you go.

  • Confirm pickup in Hoang Su Phi town the day before
  • Carry cash for tips — card rarely works at homestay
  • Inform dietary restrictions at booking
  • Travel insurance covering trekking up to 2,000 m
  • Download offline maps as backup only — guide is primary

Nam Hong vs Ban Luoc Day 1.

This route (2 days): start Nam Hong village, one Red Dao homestay, Day 2 Ho Thau descent, Moderate 22 km. Ban Luoc Day 1 only: start Black Dao Ban Luoc, same homestay network possible, then Day 2 continues 14 km to Ban Phung as part of Demanding 38 km traverse.

Fitness: Nam Hong is Moderate end-to-end; Ban Luoc is Demanding when walked as full traverse. Cultural depth vs ethnic variety — choose honestly by calendar and knees.

Many guests walk Nam Hong first, then Ban Luoc or Ban Phung — we sequence dates when you enquire.

— Seasons

Harvest booking and timing.

March through May — blossom, green terraces, clear ridges. September through November — harvest gold below the path, busiest weeks, book early. June through August — daily rain, timing adjustments. November through February — cold nights above 1,500 m, pack warm layers.

Allow two clear calendar days. Arrive town the day before Day 1. Group size two to eight trekkers.

Combine with Ban Phung terrace day or Chieu Lau Thi after one rest day — not the morning after Day 2 descent.

— Homestay

What to expect at night.

Shared mattress, bedding, mosquito net, squat toilet outside. Herbal bath optional but central to route identity. Family dinner always — eat slowly, hydrate, quiet after 21:00.

No phone signal. Guide carries emergency protocol. Ask before photography indoors or of indigo work.

How basic? Very simple, very clean. Wood-fired hot water when available.

— Book

Group size and pairing.

Programme runs two to eight trekkers — solo travellers contact us for date pairing. Small groups make ridge interval and homestay allocation easier in harvest overlap weeks.

Private departure possible with adjusted quote — same route, same host network, flexible start date when homestays available.

Maximum eight is a household and path capacity choice, not a marketing limit — larger groups split across multiple departures in October.

— Book

How to enquire.

Send dates through the programme enquiry form — we reply within 24 hours with availability and a clear quote. State dietary restrictions, fitness concerns and whether you plan to combine Ban Phung or Ban Luoc after — sequencing saves homestay conflicts in harvest weeks.

Price from US$ 185 per person reflects small-group logistics, permits, insurance and host payments — not a bulk tour bus model. Group size two to eight keeps ridge pace humane.

Hotel before and after trek is your arrangement — we recommend town night before Day 1 and rest night after Day 2 if stacking another walk.

— Schedule

Day-by-day summary.

Day 1: 07:30 briefing, 08:00 tea garden climb, 11:30 picnic lunch, afternoon ridge traverse, 16:00 homestay, herbal bath, 19:00 dinner. Day 2: 05:30 viewpoint, 07:00 breakfast, 08:00 cardamom descent, midday hosted lunch in Ho Thau, afternoon village contours, 16:00 road pickup, ~17:30 town return.

Meals included from Day 1 lunch through Day 2 lunch. Breakfast both mornings. Herbal bath included. Tips excluded — carry cash.

Two calendar days clear — not a travel day compressed between overnight buses without town rest before the ridge.

— Practical

Insurance, tips and cash.

Travel insurance should cover trekking to 2,000 m — standard for this route's elevation. Personal accident insurance is included in the programme; verify your own policy for medical evacuation beyond district roads.

Tips for guides, drivers and host family are excluded from the quoted price — cash practical because card rarely works at homestay. Fair pay for hosts is also through your booking; gifts are discouraged.

Alcoholic beverages beyond welcome rice wine are excluded — budget locally if you want additional drinks in town before or after the trek.

— Next

What to walk next.

Guests often follow with Ban Phung as a terrace day or Chieu Lau Thi for altitude. Allow rest between this homestay trek and cold ridge programmes — legs recover slower than lungs after Day 2 descent.

Ban Luoc adds La Chi and Tay country if you want three days after testing Moderate ridge walking here.

Hoang Su Phi hub compares all routes — use it before you send dates.

— Plan

Combining programmes.

Nam Hong then Ban Phung day walk is a common sequence — homestay culture first, terrace photography second. Nam Hong then Ban Luoc overlaps Day 1 homestay network — we avoid duplicate nights when sequencing.

Chieu Lau Thi after Nam Hong needs rest day — cold ridge after forest descent. Du Gia and other districts are separate enquiries — Hoang Su Phi hub keeps western terrace programmes together.

Send all intended dates in one enquiry — homestay allocation is the constraint, not van availability alone.

— Fitness

Elevation 1,100–1,650 m.

Altitude spread 1,100 to 1,650 m — acute altitude sickness unlikely; knees and descents matter more than lungs. Insurance to 2,000 m covers standard margin.

Cool homestay night above 1,500 m even when Day 1 felt warm — warm layer in daypack, not main bag on motorbike.

Chieu Lau Thi comparison: this route is lower, warmer, shorter dawn wait — different kit list entirely.

— Kit

Spare socks and layers.

Spare socks in daypack for homestay night — woodsmoke and trail dust make fresh socks morning luxury on Day 2.

Rain shell accessible at top of pack, not bottom — afternoon ridge wind arrives before rain.

Quick-dry towel for bath — hosts may provide but personal towel is reliable.

— Hub

Hub stories to read.

Featured hub stories — terrace farming, homestay etiquette, best time to trek, packing — complement this practical guide without repeating programme pricing.

Red Dao homestay evening and tea hills ridge articles deepen single topics this guide summarizes.

Programme page remains authoritative for enquiry, deposit and cancellation terms.
