Getting to Ha Giang for Trekkers
Plan the road from Hanoi to Ha Giang city, then give your legs enough time to reach the terrace, village or ridge route you came to walk.

Getting to Ha Giang.
Getting to Ha Giang is part of the trek, not a separate transfer to rush through. The road from Hanoi brings you to Ha Giang city; your programme then begins in terrace country, a village valley or on a ridge approach beyond it.
Plan the arrival around your first walking day. A buffer night in Ha Giang city or the programme town gives you time to rest, check your kit and meet the guide before an early start.
Use this guide to pace the road days first. Then compare the routes on the destination hubs before you enquire with dates.

Hanoi to Ha Giang city.
Allow six to seven hours by road from Hanoi to Ha Giang city. That is a travel day, not a warm-up for a trek: arriving late and continuing straight to a trailhead leaves little margin for a delayed road, a missed meal or an early departure.
For a one- or two-day programme, arrive the day before the walk whenever you can. A city night also makes the next transfer simpler: guides can confirm the meeting point, your group can sort luggage and you start the trail with rested legs.
If your dates are tight, tell us the time you expect to reach Ha Giang when you enquire. We can arrange a transfer and help sequence the road days around the programme you choose.
West to the terraces.
From Ha Giang city, Hoang Su Phi town is a further two to three hours west by road. Treat that leg as its own part of the itinerary, especially before a terrace or ridge day.
Ban Phung is about 90 minutes beyond Hoang Su Phi town. Its walking days begin early, so a town or village night before the trail is the steadier plan than a same-day run from Hanoi.
Nam Hong, Ban Luoc and Chieu Lau Thi each use different approaches. The Hoang Su Phi hub compares the route type, season and effort; send your dates so the transfer plan can match the programme rather than a generic map time.
- Ban Phung — highest terraces
One-day terrace walk with an early trailhead departure.
- Nam Hong to Ho Thau
Two days across Red Dao ridge country.
Village valleys and ridge starts.
Du Gia lies three to four hours from Ha Giang city via Yen Minh. A valley night before the walk keeps the first day for the hamlets and forest rather than the road.
Cao Bo, the approach for Ridge & Cloud routes, is about 90 minutes from Ha Giang city on winding roads. That is close enough for a planned transfer, but not a reason to combine a late Hanoi arrival with a pre-dawn ridge start.
The northern plateau needs a different rhythm again: permit requirements, winding roads and a longer sequence of stops. Keep your passport available and confirm the route plan in advance rather than treating Dong Van or Lung Cu as a detour added on the day.
- Du Gia forest villages
A village-valley walk after a night in the area.
- Chieu Lau Thi — sunrise ridge
An early-start ridge programme from the Cao Bo approach.
- Lo Lo Chai to Then Pa
A northern plateau route where permits and timing matter.
Passport, permits and cash.
Foreign travellers on the northern plateau and Dong Van loop need a Ha Giang province entry permit. Carry your passport and keep a copy of the permit dry; programme-specific community and forest permits are included where they apply.
Cash is still useful once you leave the larger towns. ATMs are available in Ha Giang town and Dong Van, while cards are uncommon in valley homes and market stops.
Pack the documents and small cash you need in your daypack, not in luggage that moves separately. The packing guide covers the rest of the practical kit for homestay and ridge nights.

- Packing for Ha Giang
Layers, footwear and the small kit that belongs in your daypack.
Give the road its own day.
The common mistake is to treat the final transfer as empty time. A long drive after a ridge day, or a late Hanoi arrival before a 05:30 departure, turns a good route into an exhausted one.
Build road days after long walks, not before them. On cold ridge programmes, a rest night before a pre-dawn start matters more than squeezing in one extra stop.
Weather changes road and trail pace differently. Check the seasonal guide alongside your route page, then let the programme plan carry the buffer rather than trying to recover it on the path.

Common questions.
Can I travel from Hanoi and start trekking the same day?
It is possible only when the timings are unusually generous, but it is not the steady plan. Allow six to seven hours to Ha Giang city, then the onward transfer to your programme area. A buffer night gives you a better first walking day.
Do I need a permit for Ha Giang?
Foreign travellers on the northern plateau and Dong Van loop need a Ha Giang province entry permit. Carry your passport; programme-specific community and forest permits are included where they apply.
Can you arrange my transfer?
We can arrange transfers when you enquire. Hanoi and Ha Giang airport transfers are not included in programme prices, so confirm your arrival time and route with the team first.
Should I bring cash?
Yes. ATMs are available in Ha Giang town and Dong Van, but cards are uncommon in valley homes and market stops. Keep small cash and your documents in your daypack.
How early should I arrive before a ridge programme?
Arrive the day before when you can. Ridge starts can be pre-dawn, and a late Hanoi transfer followed by an early climb is not a sensible way to begin.
Arrive rested; walk well.
Choose the area first, then give the road enough space around it. Terrace country, village valleys and the upper ridges all reward an unhurried start.
When you are ready, send your dates and arrival time. We will help match the transfer plan, programme and season before you set out.
